Karangetang volcano (Siau Island, Indonesia): intense lava flow activity, field report

The dominantly effusive eruption of the volcano continues at fluctuating, but generally high intensity. A group on our ongoing "Volcanoes and Spices" expedition to northern Indonesia witnessed the eruption from close.
Expedition leader Andi who took the attached picture last night reported:
"... Karangetang is currently fluctuating but very active. The intensity is incandescent rock falls and from the lava flow at rates of around 40 times every 6 hours. Crater 1 is erupting the lava flow lava and crater 2 still glowing; activity of the volcano is dominantly from crater 1."
