It was reported that seismic activity at Karymsky was at background
levels during 21-28 February. Some small ash plumes occured and the lava dome is still growing.

During 2-9 January there were no seimsic data available from Karymsky due to technical issues. Satellite imagery revealed a thermal anomaly in the crater on 7 January. [more]

The seismic activity on Karymsky increased above background levels on 11-12 November. Ash plumes were seen on 10 November on satellite imagery and they were drifting 38 km E and 28 km ENE. During 10-11 November explosions have generated ash plumes to an altitude of 3.8 km . Also during 10-11 November a thermal anomaly in the crater was detected. The Level of Concern Color Code remained at Orange. [more]

Based on interpretations of seismic data, possible ash plumes rose to an altitude of 3.1 km (10,200 ft) a.s.l. on 8, 10, 11, and 14 August. Analysis of satellite imagery revealed a thermal anomaly in the crater on 11 August; clouds inhibited views on other days. The Level of Concern Color Code remained at Orange. [more]
Karymsky, the most active volcano of Kamchatka's eastern volcanic zone, is a symmetrical stratovolcano constructed within a 5-km-wide caldera that formed during the early Holocene. The caldera cuts the south side of the Pleistocene Dvor volcano and is located outside the north margin of the large mid-Pleistocene Polovinka caldera, which contains the smaller Akademia Nauk and Odnoboky calderas.
Most seismicity preceding Karymsky eruptions originated beneath Akademia Nauk caldera, which is located immediately south of Karymsky volcano. The caldera enclosing Karymsky volcano formed about 7600-7700 radiocarbon years ago; construction of the Karymsky stratovolcano began about 2000 years later. The latest eruptive period began about 500 years ago, following a 2300-year quiescence. Much of the cone is mantled by lava flows less than 200 years old. Historical eruptions have been vulcanian or vulcanian-strombolian with moderate explosive activity and occasional lava flows from the summit crater.
