Seismic activity at Karymsky was above background levels during 17-24 August, with 300-800 shallow earthquakes occurring daily. Based on seismic interpretation, ash plumes may have risen to an altitude of 5.7 km (18,700 ft) a.s.l. Observations of satellite imagery revealed that a thermal anomaly was present in the crater on 20 and 23 August. The Level of Concern Color Code remained at Orange. ...more

Karymsky continues erupting producing sporadic ash plumes. An explosion on 22 Aug produced an ash plume rising to 6 km altitude according to the Tokyo VAAC.

During the past week, activity at Karymsky volcano had been decreasing, although sprodic strombolian ash explosions are still occurring. After a temporary decrease from Orange to Yellow, KVERT raised the alert level back to Orange, following an explosion on 9 June. ...more

Karymski stratovolcano continues to be very active. Frequent explosions produce ash plumes of 2-3 km height, probably accompanied by pyroclastic flows. Explosion-type earthquakes range from 100-350 events per day. Direct visual observations are difficult or impossible due to bad weather. ...more
Karymsky, the most active volcano of Kamchatka's eastern volcanic zone, is a symmetrical stratovolcano constructed within a 5-km-wide caldera that formed during the early Holocene. The caldera cuts the south side of the Pleistocene Dvor volcano and is located outside the north margin of the large mid-Pleistocene Polovinka caldera, which contains the smaller Akademia Nauk and Odnoboky calderas.
Most seismicity preceding Karymsky eruptions originated beneath Akademia Nauk caldera, which is located immediately south of Karymsky volcano. The caldera enclosing Karymsky volcano formed about 7600-7700 radiocarbon years ago; construction of the Karymsky stratovolcano began about 2000 years later. The latest eruptive period began about 500 years ago, following a 2300-year quiescence. Much of the cone is mantled by lava flows less than 200 years old. Historical eruptions have been vulcanian or vulcanian-strombolian with moderate explosive activity and occasional lava flows from the summit crater.
