Kerinci volcano (Sumatra, Indonesia): small ash eruption

A small eruption occurred at the volcano yesterday morning around 07:00 local time. An ash plume rising a few 100 m from the summit crater was observed.
The nature of the eruption (likely a phreatic explosion) is unknown. As safety precaution, access to the volcano's summit, Indonesia's highest volcanic peak and a popular climbing destination, was closed.

PVMBG reported that during 1 February-21 May 2015 white plumes from Kerinci rose 50-150 m and drifted E and W. Seismicity during 1-21 May was dominated by signals indicating emissions (100-110 per day on average) as well as volcanic earthquakes (1 per day on average). ... [more]

According to a local news article, an increase in earthquake activity prompted the local volcano observatory to issue an alert prohibiting mountaineers from climbing to the 3,805 meter tall stratovolcano's peak. VSI maintains the volcano at alert level 2 (out of 4). [more]

An small eruption occurred last Sunday (2 June) at 8:43 am (local time), preceded by a rise in seismic activity reported by the local volcano observatory. An ash explosion produced a small rising 300-600 m and light ash fall at Gunung Tujuh about 20 km away. According to local news, the sudden eruption caused panik among inhabitants of Sungai Rumpun village and several evacuated their homes. Some climbers who were on the volcano at the time of the explosions returned unharmed. ...
