Kikai volcano (Ryukyu Islands, Japan) activity update: steaming at summit crater of Iodake, occasional weak glows

Plume activity at the Iodake summit crater has remained at relatively low levels since the middle of 2009, and white plumes rose to a heights of up to 400 m above the crater rim during the reporting period. Weak volcanic glows were recorded at night with a high-sensitivity camera on November 6th and 22nd to 24th.
The results of a field survey conducted from November 17th to 20th showed no remarkable change in fumes on the northern and western slopes of Iodake, and indicated tiny white plumes rising in some places as in a previous survey. Infrared images showed no significant change in temperature distribution. Aerial monitoring conducted by JCG on November 25th revealed the presence of brown and green discolored water around the eastern coast as in a previous survey, and also showed fumes rising from the eastern slope and the summit crater of Iodake.
Seismic activity remained at low levels, with 168 events (219 in October). No volcanic tremors were observed in November (as in October).
Field surveys conducted to measure SO2 flux from November 17th to 20th showed values of around 400 t/d which were slightly higher than those in a previous survey (approx. 500 t/d) conducted in July 2012.
No unusual ground deformation indicating volcanic activity was seen in GPS observation data.
