Kirishima volcano (Kyushu, Japan): eruption from Mount Io yesterday

An explosive eruption occurred at Kirishima yesterday, but this time not from its recently active Shinmoedake, but neighboring Mount Io cone located on the Ebino Highland near the visitor center.
The explosion occurred at around 15:39 local time April 19 and produced an ash plume that rose several hundred meters. Judging from images, it is likely that it was a phreatic explosion caused by overheated water circulating at depth.
The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) raised the volcanic alert level to Level 3 ("Do not approach the volcano") shortly after the eruption, and recommends an exclusion zone of 3 km around the crater. The alert level for Mount Io had earlier been raised from Level 1 to Level 2 on Feb. 20, 2018.
