The Japanese Meteorological Agency (JMA) increased the alert level of the volcano from 1 (normal) to 2 (eruption warning). During an interval of less than 24 hours, 22 volcanic earthquakes just below the Shinmoedake crater were detected under the volcano.
This could mean that a shallow magma intrusion is under way, which in turn could result in another eruption of the volcano, which is one of Japan's most frequently active.
The warning bulletin states that ballistic impacts of volcanic bombs and pyroclastic flows could affect an area of about 2 km distance from the crater.
