Kizimen volcano (Kamchatka): eruption declared over

Friday Dec 28, 2012 11:05 AM | BY: T

Yesterday, KVERT declared the official end of the last eruption of Kizimen that had started in Nov 2011 and set the aviation color code back to green, meaning that no explosive ash emissions are expected for the time being.
For 6 months, there has been no volcanic tremor and no earthquakes since beginning of December. Video data showed sometimes incandescence at the volcanic summit and moderate gas-steam emissions, and satellite dta showed a weak thermal anomaly over the volcano, but an intensity of this anomaly is gradually decreasing and interpreted as the result of cooling of the still hot lava dome and flow.

Seismic activity has gradually decreased recently and is reported low. Video data still showed incandescence from the crater and moderate gas-and-steam activity. Satellite images detected a thermal anomaly over the volcano but the intensity of the anomaly had also gradually decreased and has almost disappeared. On 12 December the Aviation Color Code was lowered to Yellow. [more]

Activity at Kizimen has decreased over the past weeks, but incandescence, steaming and moderate seismicity continue to be registered, confirming that the lava dome remains active. [more]
