Anak Krakatau volcano (Sunda Strait, Indonesia), activity update: continuing strmbolian explosions
Tuesday Jun 03, 2008 10:51 AM |
Strombolian activity with frequent ash explosions are continuing at Anak Krakatau. Ash plumes reach approximately 1 km height.

Anak Krakatau continues to produce small ash-rich strombolian explosions. An indirect report from about one week ago about "lava reaching the sea", i.e. lava flows, need to be verified as it cannot be confirmed from other sources so far. More likely, ejected incandescent blocks are occasionally reaching the sea.

Anak Krakatau is getting active again. CVGHM reported increased seismicity during 14-21 April as well as ash plumes accompanied by ejections of incandescent rocks observed during field observations on 16, 17, and 18 April. The renewed eruption affected the summit and the E and S flanks. Booming noises were reported and occasionally heard at an observation post 42 km away. The Alert Level was raised to 3 (on a scale of 1-4) on 21 April.

Thursday, Nov 15, 2007
Anak Krakatau continues its new strombolian activity from the new vent south of the summit crater. The eruptions are producing small ash plumes, ejections of incandescent spatter bombs as well as lava flows, as news reports and data from KRAKMON indicate. Seismicity was at elevated levels.

As the Volcanological Survey of Indonesia reports, seismic activity at Krakatoa has increased during the past days, and the alert level has been risen to 2 (out of 4).[more]
