Krakatau volcano (Indonesia): eruption intensifies

The volcano continues to erupt and over the past week, its activity seems to have been increasing. This is suggested by several observations:

- Incandescence at the Anak Krakatau island (where the active vent is located) can be seen more frequently recently;
- Ash plumes have been detected more frequently both directly as well as on satellite data. VAAC reports volcanic ash frequently show ash rising to 10,000 feet (3 km) height, suggesting that some more powerful explosions occur from time to time.
- Seismicity has been increasing since early July;
- Detected heat emission from the island also shows this trend, hinting at the presence of hot lava in the crater area.
What exactly is going on at the active crater is not known with certainty, but it is very likely that the volcano is in a similar state of activity as it had been frequently over the past decades. This was characterized by near-continuous strombolian activity building a new cone, with intermittent larger explosions. Occasionally, lava flows can accompany this process, but right now, it seems unlikely as a larger thermal signal should probably be expected in such case.
Our volcano expedition scheduled to visit Krakatau from 6-10 September this year will bring direct observations (currently 2 spots left).

PVMBG reported that several eruptive events were recorded at Anak Krakatau during 16-18 July. Eruptions at 2253 and 2339 on 16 July, 0847 on 17 July, and 0826, 1549, and 1730 on 18 July produced dense gray-to-black ash plumes that rose 1-2.5 km above the summit and drifted NE, S, SW, and W.
