Typical eruption style:
Explosive. Construction of a cinder cone  island (Anak Krakatau) inside the caldera formed by the 1883 eruption. Frequent strombolian activity.

A new eruptive phase is in progress. It seems to be stronger than the intermittent explosions that occurred sporadically during the past weeks, as the volcano observatory raised the color code to RED.
The following is from the original warning note issued to aviation a few minutes ago:
"Eruption with volcanic ash cloud at 1253 UTC (2053 local). Eruption and ash emission is continuing
Volcanic Cloud Height: Best estimate of ash-cloud top is around 822 FT (257 M) above sea level, may be higher than what can be observed clearly. Source of height data: ground observer.
Other Volcanic Cloud Information: Ash-cloud moving to southeast
