The late-Quaternary Leutongey Icelandic-type basaltic shield volcano is located at the south end of a NE-SW-trending graben about 20 km west of the crest of the central Sredinny Range. A chain of youthful cinder cones along the same trend cuts across the summit of the 1333-m-high shield volcano, and another larger cinder cone is located on the south flank. The small late-Quaternary basaltic stratovolcano Medveshiy is located immediately to the SE of Leutongey. Early geologic studies in the Sredinny Range (Ogorodov et al., 1972) identified numerous Holocene eruptive centers based primarily on morphological criteria. However, later work has suggested that Sredinny Range volcanoes are less mantled by Holocene tephras than eastern Kamchatka volcanoes and therefore appear more youthful, so that Holocene eruptions are uncertain for many of these Sredinny Range eruptive vents.---
