Lokon volcano (North Sulawesi, Indonesia), activity news: increased activity from crater lake
Tuesday Dec 11, 2007 01:15 AM |
The Indonesian Volcanological Survey has increased the alert level of Lokon volcano on 9 December because of increased seismicity and strong gas and steam emission from the crater lake.
The water in the Tompaluan crater changed color from green to gray and noises from degassing became stronger. White plumes rose from the crater to
an altitude of 1.6 km (5,200 ft) a.s.l.

As our correspondant Donald Tapehe reports on 1st of June, 2006, Lokon volcano near Manado is showing signs of unrest: "Four days ago I saw unaccustomed thing on it. Burned grass around the crater can be seen from Tomohon town."
More on VolcanoDiscovery:
: In the afternoon of 17 Oct, a particularly violent explosion occurred at Anak Krakatau, blasting away a portion of the southern crater rim. A similar event might have been the final trigger for the catastrophic landslide that let the cone collapse and cause a devastating tsunami on 22 Dec 2018.
Volcanoes & Cultures
: The contrast between unspoiled rain-forest, coconut palm beaches, primitive culture and moon-like landscapes surrounding lava-spitting volcanoes could not be bigger: join us on an expedition to the two most active volcanoes of Vanuatu: Ambrym and Yasur.
Introduction to Plate Tectonics
: The Earth's upper, rigid layer is broken into several plates which are in constant motion to one another. Most earthquakes and volcanoes occur as result of these plate boundaries.
