Lonquimay volcano eruptions

stratovolcano 2865 m / 9,399 ft
Central Chile and Argentina, South America, -38.38°S / -71.58°W
Eruption list: 1988-90, 1940(?), 1933, 1887-90, 1853

1988-90 flank eruption
After a repose interval of 100 years, Lonquimay volcano erupted again from a fissure vent on the NE flank on 25 December 1988.
The eruption lasted 13 months and built up a large new flank cone, dubbed Navidad ("Christmas"). It produced lava flows and large amounts of fluorine-bearing ash. The eruption caused one fatality, forced over 2000 people to be evacuated, killed hundreds of livestock and damaged farming in a wide area around the volcano.
