Marapi volcano (West-Sumatra, Indonesia), activity update: continuing ash eruptions

Tuesday Mar 06, 2012 11:05 AM | BY: T

Mount Marapi in West Sumatra continues to produce ash explosions during the past week. According to local news, a few weak explosions on Wednesday were followed by an eruption on Sunday morning produced an ash column about 1 km high, which traveled about 10 km southwards. The volcano is currently closed for climbers and a 3 km exclusion zone is in place.

Bukittinggi's Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation Agency (PVMBG) officer Suparmo is quoted that "the activity on Sunday was Marapi's strongest in recent days, although he noted that the alert level has remained at level II as the volcano's activity is showing a downward trend".
The volcano's current activity began in August 2011, since when it has been erupting small ash plumes almost every day, but volcanologists are not sure if a larger eruption could happen. Additional seismometers have been installed on the mountain.
Mount Marapi is a 2,891 m (9,485 ft) tall stratovolcano, located near the towns of Bukittinggi, Padang Panjang and Batusangkar in West Sumatra. As its Malay name meaning "the fire-maker" suggests, it is one of Indonesia's most active volcanoes and has erupted many times since there are historic recordings. Its last significant eruption occurred in 2005.
Note that M_A_rapi is a different volcano than M_E_rapi, although their names have the same meaning and root. Merapi is located in Central Java, and also ranks as one of the country's most active fire-making mountains.
