Marapi volcano (Sumatra, Indonesia): small explosions

Two eruptions occurred from the volcano yesterday (4 June 17) at around 11:00 local time, producing small ash plumes that rose a few hundred meters.
The volcano remains at alert level 2 ("waspada") on a scale of 1-4 and an exclusion zone of 3 km around the summit is in place.
The nature of the eruptions is unknown without further analysis of the ash, but could be phreatic (steam-driven). Similar small explosive eruptions have been occurring sporadically during the past years. Whether the volcano is entering a phase of increased activity is impossible to predict.
