The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO) recorded around 156 small-magnitude earthquakes beneath the volcano's upper elevations over the past week. Most of these earthquakes occurred at shallow depths of less than 5 kilometers (~3 miles) below ground level. The strongest even was a magnitude 2.27 in the morning of March 8. This particular earthquake was located in the radial vents west of the summit caldera within the volcano 0.5 km (0.4 miles) above sea level. HVO recorded around 70 small-magnitude earthquakes beneath the volcano's upper elevations over the past week. Most of these earthquakes occurred at depths of less than 5 kilometers (~3 miles) below ground level.
