Mauna Loa volcano (Hawai'i) activity update: slight increase of small earthquakes, but no signs of impending eruption

5-years trend of inflation of Mauna Loa volcano (image: HVO / USGS)The Hawaiian volcano observatory (HVO) reported a slight increase in tiny earthquakes at shallow depths beneath the summit caldera as well as continuing trend of inflation. However, even though these are likely long-term precursors of the volcano preparing itself for its next eruption, current unrest does not merit an increase of the official alert level (green), and no eruption is expected in the near to medium-term future (weeks to months).
From the latest update:
"A slight increase in the number of detected earthquakes at Mauna Loa was noted over the past month. Small earthquakes, mostly less than M2.0, continued under the summit caldera at depths around 1-4 km (0.6-2.5 mi) below ground level.
"Seismicity was low in other areas of the volcano. The largest earthquake for Mauna Loa over the past month was a M2.8 event on May 15, which occurred under the summit caldera at a depth of approximately 3.5 km (2.2 mi) below ground level.
"Data from Global Positioning System (GPS) instruments on Mauna Loa indicate slow inflation of the summit magma reservoir system. The rates of deformation are lower than during the period of more intense unrest from 2014-2017.
"Gas and temperature data from stations on the Southwest Rift Zone and within the summit caldera showed no significant changes over the past month." (HVO)

The alert level of the world's largest volcano was raised a notch to "ADVISORY", and the Aviation Color code to "YELLOW" becuase shallow earthquakes have recently appeared in increasing numbers under the volcano. There is no sign that the volcano is about to erupt in a very near future, but it could be a medium- or long-term precursor of a next eruption. ... [more]
