Mauna Loa volcano (Hawai'i): HVO weekly report 19/12/2019

Thu, 19 Dec 2019, 23:06
23:06 PM | BY: MATTHEW
HVO report that Mauna Loa volcano is not currently erupting. The deformation and seismicity rates have not changed substantially over the past week and remain above long-term background levels.

Throughout the past week, HVO observed approximately 53 small-magnitude earthquakes (nearly all smaller than M2.0), detected beneath the upper elevations of the volcano. Most of the earthquakes occurred at shallow depths of less than 6 km (~4 miles) below sea level.

Earthquakes under Manua Loa during the past week (image: HVO / USGS)
The alert level for the volcano has been raised to yellow two days ago. This doesn't mean that an eruption is expected to occur in a near future, but acknowledges that the volcano is currently preparing itself for its next eruption, which will come, sooner or later, but currently without possibility to indicate a specific time frame. ... read all
