There have been around 80 recorded small-magnitude earthquakes beneath Mauna Loa over the past week with the strongest measuring magnitude 2.9 in the early morning hours of February 27. Most events occurred at shallow depths of less than 5 kilometers (~3 miles) beneath the surface of the summit and upper flanks of the volcano. There is continuous slow summit inflation which HVO say is “consistent with magma supply to the volcano's shallow storage system.” Gas concentrations ad fumarole temperatures remain stable. ... HVO recorded 44 small-magnitude earthquakes beneath Mauna Loa volcano's upper elevations. The strongest was a magnitude-2.2 on the 16th of February, at approximately 7 kilometers (around 4 miles) below the surface. This was deeper than most of the earthquakes which occurred at depths of less than 5 kilometers (around 3 miles) beneath the surface of the volcano. The volcano continues to inflate, due to magma being supplied to the volcano's shallow storage region. Gas concentrations and fumarole temperatures remain stable. ... Read all
