Ethymology - the meaning of "Merapi"
The name "Merapi" contains the frequently used Javanese word for fire, "api". The first part likely comes from the Sanskrit word "Meru" meaning "mountain". Thus, Merapi means "Fire Mountain".Another version we heard from local people is that the first part "Mer" comes from a verb in Javanese that has a meaning of "to make", which would alternatively translate Merapi into "the one that makes fire".
