Merapi volcano (Central Java, Indonesia): phreatic explosion yesterday

Another phreatic explosion was reported yesterday 11:00 (local time). According to a news article, the eruption produced an ash plume of about 500 m height.

Particular vigilance should be maintained to monitor the volcano. A large crack, about 230 m long and 50 m wide, has appeared in the lava dome that had been emplaced in the summit crater at the end of the 2010 eruption. It increases the current risk of sudden collapse of the dome, resulting in rock avalanches and dangerous pyroclastic flows. Even a smaller phreatic explosion than the one from 18 Nov could trigger this. [more]

A relatively strong explosion occurred yesterday morning (4-6 am local time), producing a large ash plume of about 2 km height and accompanied by loud rumblings. Ash fell to the south and east sides of the volcano, as far as Solo (30 km distance). According to local press, many people spontaneously evacuated their homes in several villages near the volcano. Activity has been low during the past months. In the crater, a small but considerable area was covered by incandescent material caused by escaping hot gas, that made a "hissing" sound very notable to the ear, our friend Øystein Lund Andersen reports who climbed the volcano on 29 Sep. ...

A small explosive eruption occurred from the volcano yesterday (22 July) morning between 04:22 and 05:35 local time. It produced a dark ash plume rising about 1000 m and ash fall in the villages of Klaten (SE of the volcano) and Sleman (SW). [more]
