Merapi volcano (Central Java, Indonesia): glowing avalanche reaches 500 m length

The lava dome continues to grow and is slowly becoming more dangerous. A glowing avalanche occurred yesterday at 20:45 local time and reached about 500 m length, lasting for 54 seconds.
Light ash falls occurred in the villages of Tegalmulyo and Tlogowoatu. Authorities have started to distribute gas masks to local residents, as this activity is likely to pick up in the near future.

Another strong, but short-lived explosive eruption occurred at the volcano this morning at 08:20 local time. The eruption lasted only about 2 minutes, but was powerful enough to send an ash column approx. 6 km above the summit crater to an altitude around 9 km.
