Background
A lava flow dated at about 1.2 million years forms Mutsure-jima island just off the SW tip of Honshu (Nakano et al., 2001-). Kifune volcano (1.6 or 1.3 million years old), 7 km to the east, consists of basaltic scoria cones and lava flows.---
