Nevado del Ruiz volcano news & activity updates

Wed, 18 Dec 2013, 13:08
Volcanic activity at the surface (degassing) and inside (earthquakes) has remained comparably low. ...more

Seismic signal from Nevado del Ruiz today (OLL station, INGEOMINAS)
An earthquake swarm affected the volcano on 7 Oct, including a volcanic-tectonic quake of magnitude 2.7 at 3.2 km depth northeast of the Arenas crater. This could indicate that new magma has been rising into the shallow volcano's conduit, which might (or not) lead to new eruptive activity.
Sat, 14 Sep 2013, 09:40
Nevado del Ruiz yesterday (INGEOMINAS)
The volcano has had a phase of increased degassing producing an important SO2 plume visible on satellite data. No reports of other unusual activity have become known.
SO2 plume from Ruiz yesterday (NOAA)
Tue, 13 Aug 2013, 15:14
Since the last update, the volcano has been relatively calm with only internal unrest in the form of fluctuating seismic activity. Manizales observatory reports a slight increase during the past week, with earthquakes clustered in the usual location (presumably an area of magma storage) about 3.5 km NE of the Arenas crater at depths between 4-7 km.
Fri, 12 Jul 2013, 10:05
Starting from 11:43 local time on 11 July, a weak pulse of tremor accompanied by small ash emissions was reported by the Manizales observatory. The ash plumes rose to about 600 m. ...more

SO2 plume from Nevado del Ruiz 18 June (NOAA)
Activity over the past days has been characterized by continuing strong degassing (elevated SO2 emissions), at times creating a steam and gas plume rising up to 1600 m. ...more

Seismic recording this morning at Nevado del Ruiz (OLL station, INGEOMINAS)
Two shallow volcanic-tectonic earthquakes of magnitudes 2.8 and 2.9 occurred this morning at 05:39 local time. Quake hypocenters were at 5 km SW beneath the Arenas crater.
Mon, 10 Jun 2013, 15:08
Seismic recording this morning at Nevado del Ruiz (OLL station, INGEOMINAS)
Strong degassing is visible as a large SO2 plume on satellite data. Seismic recordings show many mostly long-period quakes, typical of internal fluid movements.
Fri, 7 Jun 2013, 16:39
Current seismic recording at Nevado del Ruiz (OLL station, INGEOMINAS)
Seismic unrest and elevated degassing (high SO2 output) continue, but no significant eruptive activity at the surface has been observed recently.
Wed, 29 May 2013, 13:47
Seismic recording this morning at Nevado del Ruiz (OLL station, INGEOMINAS)
Small earthquake swarms at shallow depth continue to plague the volcano. They suggest ongoing (small) magmatic intrusions. ...more
