Nevado del Ruiz volcano (Colombia), activity update: increase in shallow earthquakes under Arenas crater
Sunday Feb 26, 2012 06:56 AM | BY: T
From 12:30 hours local time on February 23, a new increase in seismic activity of the Nevado del Ruiz volcano began, characterized by the occurrence of shallow earthquakes associated with fluid movements and fracturing of rock. INGEOMINAS also measured increased SO2 emissions and some changes in strain measurements.
So far, the energy level of this increase is low compared with previous episodes of unrest, but small eruptions in the near future are possible.
The seismicity is located under the active Arenas crater at depths ranging between 0.5 and 3 km, and reached a maximum recorded magnitude of 1.4 on the Richter scale.

The Nevado del Ruiz volcano (infamous for the tragic accident of the Armero mud flow disaster on 13 Nov 1985, killing more than 20,000 people) is becoming restless, as Erik Klemetti points out on his Eruptions Blog
. Seismic activity beneath the volcano has increased dramatically during the past months, and it is likely that this is related to new magma rising within the volcano.

Photos from Greece
: We have traveled and studied extensively in Greece, in particular on its active volcanic areas such as Santorini, Nisyros, Milos, Methana.
Dallol hot springs
: One of the most bizarre landscapes on earth: Dallol is a vast and very active hydrothermal field creating a colorful array of hot springs, small geysers, salt towers, colorful lakes and ponds in the middle of the deepest part of the Danakil desert and the Karum salt lake.
Volcano Calendar 2013
: Our first printed volcano calendar, featuring a paroxysm of Etna, a vulcanian explosion of Krakatau, and much more!
: In the afternoon of 17 Oct, a particularly violent explosion occurred at Anak Krakatau, blasting away a portion of the southern crater rim. A similar event might have been the final trigger for the catastrophic landslide that let the cone collapse and cause a devastating tsunami on 22 Dec 2018.
