Nevado del Huila volcano (Colombia): no significant changes in activity over the past year

Saturday Jan 05, 2019 10:20 AM | BY: T

The activity of the volcano has not changed significantly during the past year.
The volcano observatory reported that during the month of December 2018 a total of 1023 seismic events were recorded, of which 446 were related to rock fracturing processes and 577 to internal fluid movements.
Of the latter, 541 were classified as Long Period (LP type) earthquakes, 19 as tremor pulses of low energy level (type TR) and seventeen (17) as Hybrid events (type HB), which were associated with both fracturing of rock and movement of fluids.
No changes in visible olcanic activity at the surface were detected: the volcano continues to show degassing of white plumes containing mostly water vapor. SCG maintains the level of activity at YELLO (3 on the 1-5 scale), meaning it is in a potentially unstable state.

A small increase in volcanic-tectonic earthquakes was noted by INGEOMINAS' volcano observatory in Popayán. A total of 138 seismic events were recorded over the past week, out of 112 were volcanic-tectonic quakes and the remaining 26 events related to fluid movements inside the conduits (long-period quakes and one tremor pulse). ... Following a nearby magnitude 4.5 earthquake at 06:07 local time on 9 Jan, a swarm of volcanic-tectonic quakes was detected at 12-16 km distance NE of the volcano and at approx 10 km depth. During the first day, more than 600 small quakes were recorded. The swarm decreased over the past days and no other (visual, deformation etc.) changes at the volcano were observed. [more]
