Seismic activity at Agung volcano over the past months, showin the strong increase during the past days (image: PVMBG)The alert level of the volcano was again raised to the now highest level (4, "awas") as seismic activity continued to increase sharply and an eruption can be expected to occur any time.
The exclusion zone around the crater was increased from 9 to 12 km radius for the most threatened areas, in particular to the northeast, southeast and southern slopes. It is estimated that nearly 50,000 people are living within a radius of only 6 km.
The motivation of this measure, with currently no actual eruptive activity, is the huge hazard of a potentially large explosive eruption in the very densely inhabited area aroudn Agung, with a history of more than 1000 people killed during the last eruption in 1963.
Spontaneous evacuations were reported to happen yesterday and authorities have been very busy trying to manage the crisis, preparing shelters, evacuation vehicles, distributing information etc. So far, it seems that only just over 11,000 people have followed the urgent recommendation to evacuate their homes in the threatened areas.
