Agung volcano (Bali, Indonesia): shallow earthquakes, eruption warning remains in place

Tuesday Sep 26, 2017 06:30 AM | DOOR: T

The volcanic crisis continues, but so far there is no eruption and it is still impossible to predict whether one actually will occur or not.
According to the monitoring agency BPVMG, hundreds of shallow earthquakes are detected each day at the volcano, suggesting that a new batch of magma has moved to within a few kilometers beneath the summit. It may remain there and slowly cool to form an intrusion (most typical scenario) or could lead to an eruption an time.
How large and when exactly the next eruption of Agung might be is impossible to predict, but the highest alert remains in place. By now, more than 50,000 people (out of more than 60,000) from the most threatened areas in the exclusion zones have been reported to have evacuated their homes. Tourists visiting Bali should remain vigilant about the situation as a possible eruption probably will affect flight availability to and from Bali's airport due to ash plumes.
