Aso volcano (Kyushu, Japan): increasing activity

Activity from the Nakadake crater has intensified. Since yesterday, ash emissions and comparably strong incandescence have been observed, suggesting that a new magmatic eruption could be under way.
The height of the emitted ash plumes was up to 8,000 ft (2.4 km) and light ash fall was reported from Namino village 11 km NE of the Nakadake cone:

The volcano had been showing signs of unrest since 2013, with intermittent small, probably phreatic explosions and weak to moderate glow sometimes visible from the crater.
During 2013, the crater lake gradually disappeared, probably as a result of increasing temperatures leading to its evaporation. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) placed it on alert level 2 on 30 August this year.

The nature of the ongoing activity could be magmatic (fresh magma) or phreatic (i.e. caused by overheated water from the hydrothermal system). An analysis of the ash could give an answer.
JMA mentioned in its latest monthly bulletin that the edifice of Nakadake showed slight inflation, which could support the hypothesis of intruding magma.
An exclusion zone of 1 km radius around the volcano, a popular tourist destination on Kyushu, is in place.

Glow at Aso's Nakadake crater this morning
Wednesday, Jul 23, 2014
Activity remains elevated at Asosan volcano. Although no new ash emissions were reported recently, the Nakadake crater shows intense degassing and bright glow from hot fumaroles is visible at night. It seems that the crater lake which usually occupied the bottom of the crater has evaporated. [meer...]
