Bezymianny volcano (Kamchatka): probably false report of ash cloud rising to 50,000 ft (15 km)
Sunday Sep 23, 2012 10:05 AM | DOOR: T
An reported ash cloud rising to 50,000 ft (about 15 km) and moving eastwards was reported by VAAC Tokyo earlier today. No ash plume is visible on satellite images, however, and KVERT has not issued any bulletin about it as would be expected in such a large event. Most likely, the report is false. Otherwise it could mean a major eruption that has almost gone undetected (except for the VAAC vague report).

KVERT reported that seismic activity at Bezymianny had increased in the middle of August. During 24-31 August levels were moderate; 17 events were recorded on 28 August and 71 events were recorded on 31 August. Observers noted weak-to-moderate fumarolic activity during 25-26 and 29 August; cloud cover prevented observations on the other days. A thermal anomaly was detected in satellite imagery on 25 August. ...

After the explosive eruption on 1 September, seismic activity of the volcano is now low, but a viscous lava flow continues to effuse on the lava dome flank and there are strong to moderate fumarolic activity and hot avalanches. The ash plume from the explosion was last seen yesterday drifting east of Kamchatka in the northern Pacific.
Sunday, Sep 02, 2012
A larger explosive eruption occurred at Bezyianni volcano in Kamchatka yesterday evening (1 Sep) around 19h15 GMT. The explosion produced an ash cloud rising to about 10 km altitude (flight level 340) and was first detected by Tokyo VAAC who sent out an ash-cloud aviation warning (major intercontinental routes pass this area). ...

Effusive eruption of the volcano continues. Seismic activity was low on August 10-13 and moderate on August 14-15 (several volcanic earthquakes were registered). ...
