A phase of strong explosions occurred at the volcano on 9 March. The activity came as a surprise in its intensity after the volcano had been relatively calm during the previous weeks.
Starting shortly before 14:00 local time, two distinct explosions took place at the volcano at an interval of 30 minutes. Both generated large ash plumes that rose to estimated 10 km altitude and drifted northwest.
After only two hours, the ash had reached more than 350 km distance and drifted over the Gulf of Chelikhov in the northeastern part of the Sea of Okhostsk.

The explosions were also accompanied by pyroclastic flows that descended on the NW side of the volcano. Whether these were generated by the partial collapse of the eruption column, or by collapse of parts of the summit lava dome, or a combination of both is unknown.
The last activity of the volcano was in late 2016 when a small lava dome appeared in the summit crater.
