Bogoslof volcano (Aleutian Islands): new explosion underway with significant ash emission likely

After a relatively long pause, a new explosion is now occurring at the volcano.
The Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO) raised the Aviation Color Code back to RED, and wrote:
"A significant explosive eruption began at Bogoslof volcano at about 16:24 UTC on February 13 (07:24 AKST on February 13) as indicated in seismic data.
"Although at this time there has been no lightning detected, nor satellite images received to confirm eruptive activity, the intensity of seismicity strongly suggests that significant ash emissions have occurred." (AVO)
Vorig nieuws
Changes of Bogoslof Island during the recent series of explosions; The January 30-31, 2017 eruptive activity generated roughly 0.4 square kilometers of new land and as of January 31, 2017, the island area was 1.02 square kilometers, roughly three times the size of the pre-eruption island. Nearly all of this new material consists of unconsolidated pyroclastic fall and flow (surge) deposits that are highly susceptible to wave erosion and thus additional changes in the configuration of the island are likely. The volcano continues to produce large explosions at intervals of 1-3 days. The latest eruption began at 01:41 UTC on February 4 (16:41, February 3 AKST) produced a small volcanic ash plume that was observed on satellite and moved towards the north over the Bering Sea at an altitude of less than 25,000 ft above sea level. ... Another explosive phase has started at the volcano a short time ago, from 08:24 AKST local time (17:24 UTC). The Alaska Volcano Observatory detected increased seismic activity and lightnings in the area, typical for large explosions. ... [meer...]
