After two weeks of relative calm, another large explosion has occurred a short time ago at the volcano, showing that the recent eruptive phase is not over yet.
According to the Alaska Volcano Observatory, "a significant explosive eruption began at Bogoslof volcano at 7:36 UTC on March 8 (10:36 pm AKST on March 7)". An ash plume is estimated to have reached 35,000 ft (10.5 km) altitude and drifting east. Significant lightning activity, typical for large ash-rich eruption plumes, was also detected on satellite data.
The Aviation Color Code of Bogoslof was again raised to RED and the Alert level is WARNING. (AVO)
