Bulusan volcano (Philippines): small phreatic explosion

Bulusan on 7 Oct with a new very active fumarole on the southeast slope (image: PHILVOLCS)A small phreatic explosion took place at the summit crater of the volcano on 6 Oct at 03:30 am (local time).
Bad weather prevented direct observation of the eruption, but ash falls were recorded in several neighboring communities (Rizal, Buenavista Gubat Proper, Tugawe, Tigkiw, Ariman, Bintuco, Bulacao, Naagtan).
PHILVOLCS reported that new fissures, which formed in late September on the southeast side of the summit cone, have recently become more active and produce strong degassing and occasional ash venting. Apparently, this activity has further increased since yesterday's explosion: this indicates that the internal hydrothermal system is now more pressurized and more unstable than before.
Currently, there is no information regarding the possible presence of fresh magma. Seismic activity is only slightly elevated and only weak inflation is visible on instrumental data. The alert level remains at (only) 1, as it is assumed that the activity is solely caused by the hydrothermal system and not directly by ascending magma. The situation is followed closely because this could of course change quickly.

PHIVOLCS reported that on 20 July white-to-light-gray plumes rose to low levels above Bulusan and drifted WNW. During 21-25 July diffuse white plumes rose as high as 250 m above the crater and drifted NW and SW. The Alert Level remained at 1, indicating abnormal conditions and a 4-km-radius Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ). ... [meer...]

An unexpected small eruption occurred at the volcano yesterday afternoon. At 17:01 local time, two successive small explosions from a fissure vent on the west-northwestern part of the summit crater produced an ash plume that rose approx. 500 meters and caused light ash fall in some nearby villages such as Juban 11 km NW and Irosin 8 km SSW of the volcano. ...
