Background

Cerro Cacahuatique is a massive Pleistocene stratovolcano located in the interior valley of El Salvador about 30 km NNE of San Miguel volcano. The volcano (also spelled Cerro Cacaguatique) rises 1000 m above its base and is deeply dissected, although it still retains its subdued conical form. A large erosional caldera, formed through a breach on the SE side, truncates the summit.
