Ebeko volcano (Kurile Islands): intermittent ash emissions

After a period of approx 4 weeks with only intermittent and very small emissions, a stronger phase of ash eruptions occurred again on Monday.
Dense ash plumes rising several hundred meters could be observed from the small town of Severo-Kurilsk. KVERT maintains Aviation Color Code Yellow for the volcano.
The nature of the activity is unknown without a detailed analysis of the ash particles. In most cases, this type of activity is phreatic, i.e. only fragmented older rocks are being erupted and the explosions are entirely caused by shallow steam explosions, when ground water is heated by an underlying magma body, which itself is not (yet) reaching the surface.

A new eruptive phase has been occurring at the volcano again since around 8 December this year. Mild explosive activity has been producing intermittent steam and ash plumes that rose a few hundred meters height and were first noted by inhabitants of Sevaro-Kurilsk on 8 December, but are also visible on cloud-free satellite imagery. ...
