Bright glow at Fuego volcano from violent strombolian activity, lava flows and forest fires
Small pyroclastic flow at Fuego yesterday at the beginning of the paroxysm

A new paroxysm, a drastically stronger phase of activity, began at the volcano yesterday, characterized by increased strombolian-type explosions, effusion of lava flows and moderate to large pyroclastic flows that traveled to the southeastern side threatening the road between Antigua and Escuintla.
Ash fall in Antigua (CONRED)
According to the observatory of INSIVUMEH, the surge in lava effusion produced two lava flows of 2000 m length from the summit towards the Trinidad and El Jute drainages, causing forest fires. Several pyroclastic flows were generated by partial collapses of the lava masses from the upper slopes and traveled several kilometers.
Ash plumes from explosions and rising ash from the pyroclastic flows (co-ignimbrite ash) have been rising to 5 km altitude and causing moderate ash fall in Antigua and parts of Guatemala city. The international La Aurora airport was closed.
Roar from the eruption can be heard in up to 25 km distance.
About 100 people from Sacatepéquez were reported to be already evacuated. CONRED (civil protection) raised a constitutional Orange alert, one step before larger evacuations would begin.

Activity has been at the higher end of the scale recently. Strong explosions occur frequently, ejecting plumes that reach 1-1.3 km height and causing constant avalanches on the volcano's upper slopes, often causing bush fires in the vegetation below. Lees alle
