Karymsky volcano (Kamchatka) activity update
Friday Dec 27, 2013 07:15 AM | DOOR: T
Strombolian to mild vulcanian explosions continue at the volcano. VAAC Tokyo reported an ash plume at 15,000 ft (4,5 km) altitude drifting NW this morning.
Wednesday, Nov 06, 2013
KVERT reports ongoing (likely) strombolian and weak vulcanian activity. A thermal anomaly was detected on satellite data over the volcano and an ash cloud moved to 110 km to the east of the volcano. Ash emissions continued this morning.
Sunday, Nov 03, 2013
A volcanic ash plume was observed yesterday at 10,000 ft (3 km) altitude, indicating a likely explosion of moderate size had occurred earlier. The volcano has been in a state of intermittent strombolian to vulcanian explosive activity for years.
Wednesday, Oct 23, 2013
An explosion yesterday produced an ash plume rising to 7,000 ft (2.1 km) and drifting SE, VAAC Tokyo reported.
Sunday, Oct 13, 2013
Explosive activity of strombolian to weak vulanian type continues as evidenced by the presence of a ash plume that extended about 11 miles (18 km) east of the volcano yesterday. KVERT reports moderate seismic activity.
Monday, Oct 07, 2013
Strombolian activity continues. Occasionally, such as yesterday, stronger explosions produce ash plumes detected on satellite data, reaching an estimated 6,000 ft (1.8 km) altitude.
Karymsky, the most active volcano of Kamchatka's eastern volcanic zone, is a symmetrical stratovolcano constructed within a 5-km-wide caldera that formed during the early Holocene. The caldera cuts the south side of the Pleistocene Dvor volcano and is located outside the north margin of the large mid-Pleistocene Polovinka caldera, which contains the smaller Akademia Nauk and Odnoboky calderas.
Most seismicity preceding Karymsky eruptions originated beneath Akademia Nauk caldera, which is located immediately south of Karymsky volcano. The caldera enclosing Karymsky volcano formed about 7600-7700 radiocarbon years ago; construction of the Karymsky stratovolcano began about 2000 years later. The latest eruptive period began about 500 years ago, following a 2300-year quiescence. Much of the cone is mantled by lava flows less than 200 years old. Historical eruptions have been vulcanian or vulcanian-strombolian with moderate explosive activity and occasional lava flows from the summit crater.
