Karymsky volcano (Kamchatka): frequent explosions and ash plumes
Wednesday Feb 10, 2016 10:08 AM | DOOR: T
Explosions at the volcano have been relatively frequent recently and often intense enough to be detected on satellite imagery, monitored by Tokyo's VAAC (Volcanic Ash Advisory Center).
Tuesday, Feb 02, 2016
Several ash plumes reaching estimated 13-16,000 ft (4-5 km) altitude have been reported by Tokyo VAAC during the past days, suggesting that the volcano's intermittent explosions are currently more frequent and relatively intense.
Thursday, Jan 28, 2016
The typically intermittent explosive activity at the volcano has been elevated during the past days. Several ash plumes up to altitudes of up to 22,000 ft (7 km) have been reported by Tokyo VAAC during the past days.
Wednesday, Jan 13, 2016
Activity at the volcano, in continuous intermittent explosive activity for many years, seems to be elevated at the moment. Several explosions have been reported during the past days through observations of ash plumes reported reaching up to 18,000 ft (5.5 km) altitude (Tokyo VAAC).
Friday, Dec 11, 2015
A stronger (probably vulcanian) explosion seems to have occurred this morning. Based on satellite data, Tokyo VAAC reported an ash plume that rose to 18,000 ft (5.4 km) altitude.
Saturday, Nov 21, 2015
Ash plumes from the volcano drifting east at estimated 23,000 ft (7 km) altitude were reported by VAAC Tokyo yesterday.
Karymsky, the most active volcano of Kamchatka's eastern volcanic zone, is a symmetrical stratovolcano constructed within a 5-km-wide caldera that formed during the early Holocene. The caldera cuts the south side of the Pleistocene Dvor volcano and is located outside the north margin of the large mid-Pleistocene Polovinka caldera, which contains the smaller Akademia Nauk and Odnoboky calderas.
Most seismicity preceding Karymsky eruptions originated beneath Akademia Nauk caldera, which is located immediately south of Karymsky volcano. The caldera enclosing Karymsky volcano formed about 7600-7700 radiocarbon years ago; construction of the Karymsky stratovolcano began about 2000 years later. The latest eruptive period began about 500 years ago, following a 2300-year quiescence. Much of the cone is mantled by lava flows less than 200 years old. Historical eruptions have been vulcanian or vulcanian-strombolian with moderate explosive activity and occasional lava flows from the summit crater.

Latest quakes in Greece
: Greece has a lot of earthquake activity, but most of them occur around the margin of the Aegean microplate. The Cycladic islands are located in its center and therefore seismically comparably quiet.
Try our new app!
: Volcanoes & Earthquakes - our new free App for Android shows the latest earthquakes and active volcanoes on a map and as list, as well as volcano news from all the world. You can filter the data shown in various ways, e.g. by magnitude or age of earthquakes, the distance from your location, the status of volcanoes and so on.
