Lava flows on the coastal flat and on the pali (11 Sept. 06, Photo: Phil)

Phil went to the flows last night and reports the following: "...the lava is going off at the moment: Two entries still. E Ka`ili`ili has 6+ points of entry along the bench fed by at least 3 tube branches, with explosions and flying lava a common sight nowadays. Surface flows fairly extensive just a short distance inland and east, with lots of small breakouts over a tube branch that last week was feeding a flow onto the bench and into the ocean. There is a small, accessible skylight near the coast with clear views of fast-moving flowing lava and that amazing gurgling sound.
Two rivers of lava originate from a single point near the visible top of the pail, one flowing downhill to the east along the forest's edge, causing lots of smoke and visible flare-ups when trees would dry up enough to ignite, and the other flowing down to the west for the entire length of the pali, I perhaps up to a 1000 ft drop in elevation. Cheers, Phil"

Violent lava fountain from the margin of the lava lake in the East Pond vent

Very bad weather continues to trouble the Hawaiian Islands and makes observation of Kilauea's activity difficult.
During visits to active areas, we found the sea entry at the East Lae`apuki lava delta moderately active with two main entry points. In the coastal flat, few breakouts are active at the eastern margin of the active PKK flow in the area about 1 km east of the main tube (its trace being visible from distance by the dense steam and bluish gas escaping from its roof). The tube itself has an extremely thin crust that makes the area around it very dangerous, and it is currently closed off due to that reason.
At Pu'u O'o, the lava lake inside the East Pond vent is very active, with impressive waves on its surface and yellow fountains at its southern margin that resemble a hellish cauldron of boiling magma. The lake seems to be fed by two vents at the longer extremes of the crater. It is about 25x15m large and at about 15 meters depth below the rim. Observation is not possible but from its rim, which is highly unstable and in most parts periliously overhanging or showing signs of very recent or imminent collapses. -->More on Kilauea

The activity at Kilauea has not experienced big changes over the past weeks: lava continues to flow into the East Lae`apuki lava delta and only few breakouts from the active PKK flow on the coastal flat or the pali occur. At Pu`u `O`o, East Pond Vent, January Vent, Drainhole are all brightly glowing from lava close to the surface.

Lava continued to flow through the PKK tube and entering the sea in several points at the East Lae`apuki delta. No or few breakouts occur on the pali and in the coastal flat.
Vents at Pu`u `O`o are still glowing, although not very active. The lava lake inside the East Pond vent has mostly crusted over. Volcanic tremor is at a moderate level at Pu`u `O`o.

Half a month into 2006, eruptive activity at Pu`u `O`o continues unabated. Several vents within the crater continue to be active and glow is frequently visible on clear nights. Lava is still flowing through the PKK lava tube from Pu`u `O`o to the ocean, with a scattered surface breakout flows that are intermittendly active near Pu`u `O`o itself, on the steep slopes of Pulama pali, above the coastal plain, and just above the coastal plain before the lava enters the sea.
