Anak Krakatau volcano (Sunda Strait, Indonesia) activity update: ash explosions

Monday Jan 31, 2011 08:05 AM |

According to local news, Krakatau continues to produce strong explosions, producing ash plumes up to 1200 m high.
In an interview, Anton S Pambud, head of the volcano observatory on the coast of Banten, admits that real-time monitoring is hardly possible because the seismic station is not working and needs repair or replacement, which in turn will only be possible once the eruption has calmed down...

A small group of VolcanoDiscovery visited Krakatau between 9-11 November: During this time, we observed strong ash emissions from the summit crater, a twin crater with two craters separated by a narrow ridge, one breached to the SE at the same position of the older summit crater and one facing to the NW. The 2007-2009 crater and lava dome complex to the S beneath the summit crater are mostly covered, but still morphologically visible. ... [meer...]

Anak Krakatau started a new eruption, our volcanologist guide Doni reports from Indonesia. Explosions (near the summit?) created a new crater on its eastern side. [meer...]

During a recent visit to Krakatau from 12-14 July on one of our tours, ash eruptions were observed, producing plumes of several hundreds of meters. During night, however, no incandescence was seen. [meer...]
Violent eruption on Aug 11, 2009 (Photo courtesy: Yohannes Tyas Galih Jatis)
Monday, Aug 17, 2009
Explosive activity at Anak Krakatau has resumed over the past weeks. Strong vulcanian-type eruptions from the growing lava dome in the new crater occur at intervals of 90-360 minutes as Yohannes one of our correspondants reports from a recent visit. Blocks are being thrown over the whole of the southern part of the island, including the forest and often reach the water as well. Small pyroclastic flows sometimes develop on the slope of the summit cone. The island must be regarded as an extremely dangerous place to be at the moment. Whoever visits the island should be aware of the risk of a sudden violent explosion, especially because there is little warning before an explosion and there are long intervals of quiet in between.
