Volcano news: Mauna Loa volcano (Big Island, Hawaii)
Sat, 5 Oct 2019, 13:05
Source: US Geological Survey
During the past week, approximately 40 small-magnitude earthquakes (all smaller than M2.5) were detected beneath the upper elevations of Mauna Loa. Most of the earthquakes occurred at shallow to intermediate depths of less than 10 km (~6 miles) below ground level. ...meer

Earthquakes under Manua Loa during the past week (image: HVO / USGS)
The alert level for the volcano has been raised to yellow two days ago. This doesn't mean that an eruption is expected to occur in a near future, but acknowledges that the volcano is currently preparing itself for its next eruption, which will come, sooner or later, but currently without possibility to indicate a specific time frame. ...meer

5-years trend of inflation of Mauna Loa volcano (image: HVO / USGS)
The Hawaiian volcano observatory (HVO) reported a slight increase in tiny earthquakes at shallow depths beneath the summit caldera as well as continuing trend of inflation. However, even though these are likely long-term precursors of the volcano preparing itself for its next eruption, current unrest does not merit an increase of the official alert level (green), and no eruption is expected in the near to medium-term future (weeks to months). ...meer

Volcanic unrest at the volcano has ceased (at least for now), and the volcano observatory lowered the alert level of the volcano back to "normal" (green): ...meer

M4.0 earthquake under Mauna Loa today
A magnitude 4.0 earthquake
occurred at 2.4 km depth beneath the summit caldera of the volcano half an hour ago (04:25 am in Hawaii). ...meer

Weekly earthquake rate of Mauna Loa during the past year (HVO)
The volcano is not erupting, but continues to show unrest. Deformation and seismic activity remain above long-term background levels. ...meer

Seismic unrest continues at the volcano, but at lower levels than during mid-late summer, HVO reports: ...meer

The alert level of the world's largest volcano was raised a notch to "ADVISORY", and the Aviation Color code to "YELLOW" becuase shallow earthquakes have recently appeared in increasing numbers under the volcano. There is no sign that the volcano is about to erupt in a very near future, but it could be a medium- or long-term precursor of a next eruption. ...meer

Recent earthquakes under Mauna Loa volcano
A small earthquake swarm occurred last week under the volcano. During 5-7 September, HVO detected about 350 small earthquakes up to magnitude 2.4 in a tightly clustered area at about 7 km depth west of the summit caldera. Only about 25 were strong enough to be located (map). ...meer

Very weak unrest in the form of inflation and seismic activity continues at the largest active volcano of our earth, which has not erupted since 1984. However, this activity is not strong enough to justify a raise of the alert level from green "normal" to yellow "unrest". There is currently no sign that Mauna Loa will erupt any time soon. ...meer

The latest update of the USGS mentions that minor inflation of a shallow magma reservoir beneath Mauna Loa may be occurring. Seismicity rates were slightly elevated. However, the level of observed seismicity is far from alarming and the alert level remains at green. No eruption is expected in the near future. ...meer
