Merapi volcano (Central Java, Indonesia), update: strongest explosion so far, ash plume reaching 20 km
Wednesday Nov 03, 2010 16:17 PM |
The eruption of Merapi volcano seems to have produced its strongest explosion so far today this afternoon around 16-17h local time. According to satellite data from the Darwin VAAC, a large ash plume has been first detected at 09:47 UTC (=16h47 local time) reaching flight level 600, i.e. 60,000 ft or ca. 20 km altitude.
If that figure is true, it means that the scale of the eruption has reached a new level of magnitude: either a significant dome collapse took place or a very violent, vulcanian or sub-plinian explosion, or a combination of both. The first scenario alone seems unlikely given the short time the dome has had to grow so far, the eruption might rather be related to the ascent of fresh, gas charged magma.
The evacuation zone around Merapi has been extended to 15 km radius.

Strong ash exlosions and the growth of the lava dome continue at Merapi volcano. Yesterday and today, several medium-sized pyroclastic flows reached up to 4 km distance into the river canyons of Kali Gendol, Lamat, Senowo, and Krasak. Several thousands of inhabitants not yet evacuated are reported to have fled the area in panic. Two persons dies in a related road accident.

The strong eruptions last night showered Ygoya and Sleman cities with ash. Andy reports directly from the observatory Babadan, + 1279 m on the western slope, still mostly free of ash: "I witnessed 2 times pyroclastic flows since at 05.00 through Senowo river. Again last night 29 oct, around at 24.00 there was a massive glowing ash column rising up until 1,5 km, and all people at 5 at the distance 10 km from the summit must evacuated. ...

New explosions and pyroclastic flows occured today at Merapi volcano. An example of a pyroclastic flow triggered by material falling off the growing dome can be seen at a published Reuters press photo
