Soufriere Hills volcano (Montserrat, West Indies (UK)) activity update

Tuesday Sep 11, 2012 10:05 AM | DOOR: T

Very little change has been observed on the lava dome during the past week, apart from some modifications to the steep eastern face owing to the formation of the pyroclastic flow on 29 August, which occurred at 3:45 pm (local time).
In its weekly update (31 Aug - 7 Sep), MVO indicated that the seismic network recorded 5 VT earthquakes, 10 hybrid events, 8 long-period events and 3 rockfalls during the past week.
SO2 emissions averaged 436 tonnes per day, with a maximum of 543 and a minimum of 359.

MVO reported that during 24-31 August activity at the Soufrière Hills lava dome was at a low level, although seismicity remained slightly elevated. At 1545 on 29 August a small pyroclastic flow traveled 1-1.5 km E down the Tar River Valley. The flow lasted 75 seconds, generated an ash cloud that rose 900-1,200 m and drifted W over Plymouth, and had an extensive fine-grained surge component. The Hazard Level remained at 2 (on a scale of 1-5). [meer...]
