Nevado del Ruiz volcano (Colombia) activity update
Thursday Jun 20, 2013 15:51 PM | DOOR: T
SO2 plume from Nevado del Ruiz 18 June (NOAA)Activity over the past days has been characterized by continuing strong degassing (elevated SO2 emissions), at times creating a steam and gas plume rising up to 1600 m.
Seismic activity has remained elevated and dominated by shallow volcano-tectonic quakes in areas SW, NW and N of the Arenas crater.

Two shallow volcanic-tectonic earthquakes of magnitudes 2.8 and 2.9 occurred this morning at 05:39 local time. Quake hypocenters were at 5 km SW beneath the Arenas crater. [meer...]

Strong degassing is visible as a large SO2 plume on satellite data. Seismic recordings show many mostly long-period quakes, typical of internal fluid movements. [meer...]

Seismic unrest and elevated degassing (high SO2 output) continue, but no significant eruptive activity at the surface has been observed recently. [meer...]
