Nevado del Ruiz volcano (Colombia) activity update
Wednesday Dec 18, 2013 13:08 PM | DOOR: T
Volcanic activity at the surface (degassing) and inside (earthquakes) has remained comparably low.
During the last week, volcano-tectonic type earthquakes associated with rock fracturing within the volcanic structure occurred mainly in areas north, northeast and west of the Arenas crater at shallow depths between 2.8-4 km. The maximum magnitude recorded was a 2.8 ML (Local Magnitude) event at 13:27 (local time) on 14 December.
Monday, Oct 07, 2013
An earthquake swarm affected the volcano on 7 Oct, including a volcanic-tectonic quake of magnitude 2.7 at 3.2 km depth northeast of the Arenas crater. This could indicate that new magma has been rising into the shallow volcano's conduit, which might (or not) lead to new eruptive activity.
Saturday, Sep 14, 2013
The volcano has had a phase of increased degassing producing an important SO2 plume visible on satellite data. No reports of other unusual activity have become known.
Tuesday, Aug 13, 2013
Since the last update, the volcano has been relatively calm with only internal unrest in the form of fluctuating seismic activity. Manizales observatory reports a slight increase during the past week, with earthquakes clustered in the usual location (presumably an area of magma storage) about 3.5 km NE of the Arenas crater at depths between 4-7 km.

Starting from 11:43 local time on 11 July, a weak pulse of tremor accompanied by small ash emissions was reported by the Manizales observatory. The ash plumes rose to about 600 m. ...
Thursday, Jun 20, 2013
Activity over the past days has been characterized by continuing strong degassing (elevated SO2 emissions), at times creating a steam and gas plume rising up to 1600 m. ...
