Pacaya volcano (Guatemala) activity update - increased fumarole activity

Tuesday Sep 11, 2012 10:05 AM | DOOR: T

Current seismic signal (PGC station, INSIVUMEH)
Current seismic signal (PGC station, INSIVUMEH)
The activity of the steam plume (which had been on average of 50-100 m height) has increased drastically, INSIVUMEH reports, and is now 600 m tall. A possibility is that this is related to increased groundwater infiltration. There are no sounds or rumblings. The seismic activity seems to be increased as well.

At the surface, the only activity is white, mainly steam emission. The seismic station PCG records elevated numbers of volcanic earthquakes and tremor (internal vibration) as well as superficial volcanic events. [meer...]
Current seismogram from Pacaya volcano
Sunday, Aug 19, 2012
No explosions or other surface activity other than weak steaming and fumaroles have been recorded at Pacaya, but the seismic signal shows weak tremor and some volcano-tectonic quakes related to fluid movements inside the volcano. [meer...]

A tremor signal is being recorded at Pacaya, but apart from fumaroles degassing, there is no visible activity. [meer...]

Thursday, Aug 09, 2012
A blue-white plume rising up to 100 m above the crater are currently the only visible activity at Pacaya. A number of weak earthquakes are visible in the seismogram, suggesting fluid movements under the volcano. [meer...]
