Pacaya volcano (Guatemala) activity update

Thursday Jun 27, 2013 16:19 PM | DOOR: T

Mild, typical strombolian activity has established itself inside the Mackenney crater. "Dry" (not containing much ash) explosions occur frequently and eject incandescent scoria to about 25 m height above the crater and an intra-crater cone, now about 15 m high, is being formed inside the crater. Some of the explosions can be heard in up to 5 km distance. At night, glow can be seen from the crater.

Weak strombolian activity has resumed, with small explosions about every 10 minutes that produce small ash puffs. Some of the explosions are audible, but most are only inferred from the seismic signal. Volcanic tremor accompanies this process. [meer...]

Eruptive activity has resumed. Weak incandescence and explosions could be seen and heard during the past days. Today, no direct observations were reported, but volcanic tremor increased significantly during today, which could indicate some more vigorous activity soon. [meer...]

The volcano has been quiet yesterday. No explosions occurred. INSIVUMEH reports moderate steaming only. [meer...]

An emission of fine ash occurred this morning at 04:00 local time, but INSIVUMEH reports no other (e.g. strombolian) activity but degassing from the crater at the moment. [meer...]
