Lava fountains and flows from the eruptive fissure near Le Nez coupé de Sainte-Rose in the upper parts of the Grandes Pentes of Piton de la Fournaise volcano. Photos from the website of "Le Journal de l´Isle" (

Piton de la Fournaise erupted again on 26 December, with a first fissure opening at the base of the summit cone, and a second one just below the slope break of the Grandes Paintes (the steeper slope of the caldera towards the ocean), between 1500 and 1600 m elevation. Lava fountains are emerging from the eruptive fissure and several lava flows are travelling down the slope in direction to the ocean, having reached around 2 km away from the ocean as of Dec. 29.

The third eruption this year, on the 29th of Nov., was one of the shortest one during the past years: lasting only 14hrs, from 6h25 local time, it was already declared ended at 20h15! Because of bad weather conditions, a proper reconnaissance and surveillance of the area has not yet been possible.

Piton de la Fournaise volcano, La Réunion Island, erupted again for the third time this year. Here the original report from the volcano observatory:
"Immediately after the last eruption in the Dolomieu crater, the permanent GPS network and extensometer network of the "Observatoire volcanologique du Piton de la Fournaise" continued to show strong surface deformations, indicating the preparation of a new eruptif event. Today, November 29, at 0559 in the morning a seismic crisis started and at 0625 eruption tremor indicated the beginning of the third eruption this year. A first vent opened in the western Dolomieu for about 3 hours. A second vent opened on the north flank with a main emission point at 2370 m altitude. Very few lava projections were visible, however a rapid and large lava flow went down the flank in direction of Piton Kapor. Further observations were impossible due to clouds, fog and rain."

This year's second eruption of Piton de la Fournaise volcano was ufficially declared to have ended today, after tremor had ceased abruptly yesterday at 13:10h local time on the 18th of Oct. 2005 while visual observations had yesterday not been possible due to bad weather.

The eruption at Piton de la Fournaise continues at stable low levels. According to the volcano observatory on the island, the new cone is slowly growing, showing moderate degassing, slightly increased today, weak spattering, and emitting lava flows that are still visible. By now, the new flows have covered 30-50% of the crater floor of Dolomieu crater.Tremor is low.

The main vent of the new eruption remains active with moderate lava fountains and strombolian activity, emitting a few small lava flows inside Dolomieu crater.
Since today, access to the Enclos has been reopened to the public on a temptative basis (on condition that visitors "behave"), but access is limited to the time between 6am and 5:30pm. More details (in French) on the following article.

The eruption at Piton de la Fournaise and volcanic tremor levels have stabilized and continue at low levels. Activity continues inside Domolieu crater, where a small cone of about 10 m height has been formed at the pricipal vent. Lava fountains and strombolian activity atteign heights of about 30 m occur and several active lava flows depart from the vent, sometimes as overflows from its crater that shows frequent inside collapses.

On the 8th of March, the 1st eruption of Piton de la Fournaise on La Réunion island, has been declared to be over. For more than a week, no tremor or other signs of eruptive activity have been recorded.

New interesting developments take place on La Réunion island, where the eruption has entered e new phase:
While visual lava emission from the vents in the Plaine des Osmondes at about 1600 m a.s.l. more or less stopped on the 24th, a large river of lava, believed to originate from accumulation beneath the flow field emerged from there on the afternoon of the 25th, travelling about 5 km in less than 2 hours down the Grandes Pentes (the steep ocean-side slope inside the horse-shoe-like open caldera), cutting the national road and entering the ocean.
From Thursday 24th on, shallow earthquakes appeared seismicity beneath Dolomieu crater on the summit of the volcano, increasing to a swarm with several hundreds of quakes up to magnitude 3 on Saturday 26th. This might be an indicator of the formation of a new pit crater.
At the same time, a new vent opened on the North East rift zone above "Bois Blanc" within the "Trou de Sable" on the northern boarder of the enclos at 450 m altitude. A new lava flow progressed within the enclos and stopped about 100 m above the national road.
The volcano observatory warnes that an eruption "hors enclos" (outside the caldera) now should be considered a possibility within the next days. The area is being kept under under close surveillance.

The eruption at Piton de la Fournaise volcano on La Réunion island continues, sending lava flows down the steep flank of the volcano's E flank towards the sea. A brief pause during the eruption occurred between 21 and 23 Feb., where lava emission and eruption tremor were at very low levels, and many believed the eruption was actually over. The following is a report from Thomas Staudacher, head of the volcano observaotry of Piton de la Fournaise:
